Awesome Animals in Knit & Crochet

My sister recently picked up knitting, which is something I've told myself I won't get into because I have so many crafts already! Anyway, she went from knitting lovely scarves to knitting animals - from patterns she made up herself! Here is a sample of her newest creation:

Her talent blows me away! If she decides to start selling any of her work or her patterns, I will post a link. Right now she is making animals for fun, for gifts, and for her new baby!

My sister's work is also the inspiration for my feature today: Awesome Animals in Knit & Crochet! Each animal has been handmade by the featured crafter, or is a sample from a pattern made by the crafter. I love the variety, the cuteness, and the realism in these fabulous pieces!

As I search for local craft fairs to attend or participate in, and then go to them and spend money on wonderful handmade items, I realize there are many, many talented artists and crafters in my region. DIY: Simple Wire-Wrapped Ring Tutorials

One of my first rings: Simple Wire Spiral

I've been exploring wire-wrapping more and more recently. Most of my attempts have been simple and probably amateurish, but also fun, good practice, and great learning experiences! One of the simplest designs is a wire ring - once you get the hang of the pattern, you can make cute, fun, and/or elegant rings quickly, easily, and with startling variety just by choosing different focal beads!

If you are just starting out with wire wrapping techniques, I'd suggest learning to wrap beads before undrilled stones/rocks or cabochons. It's easier for beginners to make wearable and durable projects with beads because the wire will go through the bead, whereas stones and cabochons require tight fitting wire and usually a gentler touch with tools to place the wire setting without damaging the stone. Cabochons are beautiful - but more complex to wrap. Stones can be "messy" wrapped pretty easily, but the technique is not as versatile as the ring tutorials I'm showing off today!

I started with this tutorial from the Instructables website:

I found the directions and photos easy to understand and follow. I chose to wrap the ends of my wire around the ring shank, however, instead of just tucking them under the spiral. I think this makes the ring sturdier and less likely to get caught on something and pulled apart while wearing it - but maybe I'm just too paranoid!

The next type of ring I made was one with a bead. My first attempts were pretty...um...ungainly! I'm not sure the exact tutorial I followed, but this one by Lytha Studios is awesome:

You can see the variation in the look of the ring just by varying the type of metal used or the focal bead, too. Pearls, crystals, glass, round, square, faceted, etc. - they all look good and can really change the feel of the ring from classy to earthy! In this tutorial, you wrap the wire around the base of the bead several times.

There are many tutorials and different types of wire-wrapped rings out there - in books and magazines, on internet blogs and websites, or even at your local bead shop. These tutorials are just the basics - consider playing with the design and technique to make a ring that is truly unique and you! You can add more beads, vary the wrap technique, mix metal colors, or even add more curlicues to the design.

Additional tips that I found useful:

Start with soft, cheap wire - you really want your 1st ring to turn out and be immediately wearable and show it off - I know! I did too, but the reality is that practice makes, well, more perfect. Plan on re-wrapping your first rings a couple times and throwing away used wire (or recycle it!). Re-using wire is possible, but kinks remain in the wire that give a rough and shoddy appearance to the finished piece. Wire also hardens with each use, so breakage is more likely if you re-use it.

aluminum wire is the softest there is - it makes practicing easy. I used aluminum wire 1st and still make tester pieces from it before moving on to more expensive and stiffer wire.
copper wire is the next easiest for practice. It's still relatively cheap compared to the precious metals and it comes in "soft", "half hard", and "hard" designations. Just know that soft is easy to bend and form, while hard is difficult to manipulate! Each type has it's uses in wire-wrapping techniques, however.
Other benefits of using copper wire:

Copper hardens with use and over time (unlike aluminum) and makes a fairly stable ring. You can also texture or flatten it with hammer and anvil or other shaping/dapping/stamping tools.
Copper wire comes in many colors and sizes - look for non-tarnish varieties, enameled (colored) variations, or even silver & gold plated types! Artistic Wire, Beadalon, and Parawire all make copper wire that is perfect for wire-wrapping.
People with metal allergies and sensitive skin can generally wear solid copper, enameled copper, or plated copper jewelry because there is no nickel. Most metal allergies are due to a high nickel content in craft wire and some jewelry findings, not to all metals. Fine silver and 14K gold (or higher) is generally safe as well.

Practice Practice Practice! I think this is pretty self explanatory - the more you play with wire, the better you understand how to manipulate it. Try these tutorials, but also others or your own designs. Don't be afraid to try something new - the worst that happens is that you take it apart and try again! I've done this so many times, myself, but I always learn a little something, too!

Start simple - I love jumping into difficult projects, and I learn a lot in the process of figuring the pattern out, but I would have also saved myself a lot of frustration and heartache and wire if I'd started simple and moved up more slowly to the difficult things! Knowing and understanding basic techniques really helps improve your intermediate and advanced designs - both in execution and in polish!

Adjustable Ring Design w/Beads

Use the proper tools - I know most people don't want to jump in spending over $100 on tools for a project, and neither do I! You don't need the top of the line pliers to get started in wire-wrapping, but you do need some basics. Even cheap jewelry pliers from your local craft store will work just fine for months before you might need (or want) to purchase nicer tools! A kit is usually available with the basics for under $30. And once you do purchase nicer tools, keep in mind that they will last a lifetime if they aren't abused - I've had mine for over 10 years and they still work great!

Do Not buy pliers from a hardware store and expect them to work for jewelry. Many hardware pliers have teeth on the jaws and these will mar your wire very fast!
Cheap alternatives to nylon jawed pliers for wire-wrapping include using masking tape on the jaws or dipping them in a rubber tool coating such as Tool Magic. Benefits include flexibility as tape and coatings can be removed or reapplied as necessary, while nylon pliers are always nylon pliers.
The Basics - round nose pliers, rosary pliers (also called chain-nose pliers), flat nose pliers, and flush cutters (to cut flush wire ends - these are different from hardware store wire cutters!). Extras that are handy, especially for ring projects, include a ring mandrel, ring sizer, and bent nose pliers. Any round object in the approximate size you want the ring will work, however - when in a pinch check over the tools you (or your neighbor, father, etc.) have. I found that a ratchet & socket set worked very well!

Most importantly - HAVE FUN! If you are getting frustrated, take a break, come back later, and try again. Enjoy playing with the wire and picking out specialty beads for your amazing ring projects! Tetrahedral Coin Purse - A Fun & Puzzling DIY Project!

I came across a tutorial for this tetrahedral coin purse a few months ago. In the holiday lull (I know, what lull, right?!?!), I finally had a chance to make one! It's now in the possession of one of my sisters and I hope she's enjoying it. I have to find more ribbon and make myself and my daughter one, too - they are not as time consuming to sew by hand as one may think and the final product is so much fun! It's like a little brain teaser to carry around in your purse - and it's useful too!

Craft Passion: Zip Itself Coin Purse Tutorial

I wanted to share photos of my project and point you all toward the original tutorial. I stumbled upon (I really do like that button....) the pattern originally at Craft Passion. If you haven't visited this awesome site of easy patterns and tutorials, you should! The purse is called a Zip-Itself Coin Purse on Craft Passion, and the directions are pretty easy to follow.

Some alternatives you may want to try:

Use 2 ribbons, one inside and one outside, instead of fabric. Craft Passion used a ribbon on the outside and a fabric liner. I used 2 ribbons and I think it worked out well. However, make sure your inside ribbon is just a little smaller than your outside ribbon, or that you sew the far enough away from the zipper teeth so the zipper doesn't get caught on the ribbon liner! I had to re-sew a portion of my purse because of this.....

Use other sizes of ribbon - I used 1 inch ribbon. It helps to have some sewing experience if you are going to change the pattern, but it's doable. Grab a longer zipper (I think I had 24") to make up for the difference in pattern sizes. Be prepared to finish the ribbon BEFORE the end of the zipper. Just trim off the excess zipper and finish as per the directions! It's really important to follow the "shaping" portion of the directions if you change the pattern, too.....just zip up your purse periodically to see how it's coming along!

Machine stitch some of the ribbon to speed up the process - This would be pretty easy on the straight portions of the pattern. Some things to keep in mind include matching your thread well because it will show more than hand-stitching and you will still have to hand stitch the liner to keep the purse looking nice. OR machine stitch the liner first - I don't know how hard this would be. I actually hand stitched the whole pattern even though I really don't enjoy hand-stitching. It took maybe 2 hours, so it wasn't that bad and I got some practice! Some others who have used Craft Passions tutorial were able to machine sew some of their work.

Add a zipper pull! I love my beads and had to add a little something more. There are a couple options for this - make a permanent pull by stringing on beads to an eyepin and closing the eyepin over the zipper (pictured) OR make the eyepin and attach that to a clasp, then attach the clasp to the zipper. This one would be interchangeable!

And one final hint - some ribbon melts under a flame really nicely. Depending on your ribbon, you might consider finishing off the cut edges of the ribbon via flame, instead of folding under and sewing as per the directions. It works for me, anyway!

Tidy Crafts: Get Your Studio Makeover!

I was contacted by Tidy Crafts through Etsy a couple months ago. They were looking for crafters and artists to test their products - or so I thought. I happily replied that I would love to try out their organizers (I can ALWAYS use more organizers for my crafts and beads!) and expected them to send me one of their organizers. I thought I would get to use it for a while, and then write a review on what I thought of it. I also shared this information with my local Etsy Group since Tidy Crafts was looking for local testers.

More of my mess.....

Well, a month later I found out that Tidy Crafts had actually been searching for a messy studio/craft area to redo for FREE! They chose my mess to organize and I was blown away. Really, me? Are you sure I'm the one you want to give this amazing gift to? It's actually kind of embarrassing that my space is such a disaster area..... A couple weeks later they came by, looked my space over, and started making plans. A couple days later they came and organized my beads and supplies!

The guys were very friendly and VERY generous. They gave me several spinning organizers, a back board, more little organizers for that, tool hangers, and more. I couldn't believe the difference in my space. I went from having a 1 by 2 foot working space to my ENTIRE 6 foot table to work on! I admit, the entire table didn't stay completely clear, but it's still mostly clear and I can not only bead in my space, but also sew or do other crafts. It's amazing and wonderful!

I've been loving everything they gave me to try. The little containers are the perfect size to hold most bead strands, including full hanks of size 11 seed beads (which I use a lot....). The carousels are awesome for storage, display, and finding the beads I want. I organized by size and color, and it's so easy to find what I want now! The little cases are clear, too, which makes it easy to see what's in them and match colors up quickly. The carousels come in a couple different models, and the one I have "locks" the cases in place so I can travel with them easily. They seem sturdy and well made, but can be a little brittle in the extreme cold. So don't drop it in freezing weather! But really, what isn't brittle when it's that cold outside?!?!?!

My only concern has been with the storage of my pearls. Pearls are notoriously difficult to store, and I had to come up with a different storage solution than what Tidy Crafts provided. Pearls need to breath, and can react poorly to plastics or papers, including cardboard. So I have them stored in open glass containers - it's really helped keep them lustrous! I've had pearls "rot" on me before (the luster faded and holes appeared in the body of the pearl), so I make certain to store them correctly now! This isn't an issue with glass pearls, however.

I know this has sounded like a huge promotional advertisement, but I really do appreciate what Tidy Crafts did for me, and I really have liked their products. I'm not getting paid to endorse them, I'd simply like to give back to this generous company. They didn't even ask me to carry flyers or business cards with me when I attend craft fairs, or to post on my blog, or anything! It was a free giveaway with no strings attached. Very generous! And it's helped me stay organized, design more jewelry quicker, and even do other crafts (such as sewing) in the same space! How awesome is that?!!?

DIY: Child's Advent Calendar - Felt & Velcro Fun!

I should have posted this project in November, before Advent Calendar season, but I only finished it DAYS before December myself! Still, I hope you enjoy and that it inspires you to create your own advent calendar!

Advent Calendar: Background, Background w/Pillow Figures, Background after 2.5 year old plays w/it!

I remember having several advent calendars growing up - paper ones, cloth ones, ones with pockets - but they all disappeared when I moved out of the house! Grama cannot find them. Well, with a little one in the house and another one the way, I decided we needed one! We looked a little in stores and on Etsy - there are many cute ones on Etsy - but they were not what I wanted. I didn't want literal drawers/doors to open, my child doesn't need more candy/toys, I wanted flaps to flip or magnets to move - something child-friendly to play with unsupervised!

So what did I do? I decided to make my own calendar this year! So with Grama's help, we designed and sewed this fun, child friendly countdown to Christmas calendar! Materials are simple - felt, patterned fabric, velcro, time, and patience! Oh, and a sewing machine greatly speeds the process along....try choosing thread colors that blend into your other colors for a neater look in the end. Using red on the bobbin, and other colors on the spool, for example, made the back of the calendar look almost as nice as the front!

First I decided on a size - I chose 2x3 feet. I wanted room for my little one to play! I cut the background (red) and stitched a border around the edges. This helps prevent the felt from stretching a little, but also distracts from, ahem, uneven edges! Plus it looks nice, right?! The next step was to determine how many tabs I needed to hang the calendar up. I used 3, but 4 or 5 would NOT have been too much! I chose to hang mine from a bamboo rod from a ribbon on a door. Works great so far!

I free-handed the background felt pieces and edge stitched them down to the background next. Cut everything out and lay it out. Move/trim as needed until you are happy with the background design! Then start sewing the pieces down - I suggest one at a time. Sky, snow, tree trunk, tree bottom, tree middle, tree top, & star was the order I went in. Also consider sewing curving lines throughout the large felt pieces to help tack them to the background - otherwise when the velcro pieces are pulled from the background the felt will pucker/pull away from the background (red felt in my case).

Next comes the numbers! We chose a font on the computer, printed out the numbers in the size we wanted them (about 2x3 inches), and traced them onto the felt. Grama decided to try "gluing" the numbers down with an iron-on adhesive. This worked for placing the numbers and tacking them down, but this is not permanent on felt. There just isn't enough packed fibers to really grab onto the numbers! So we tacked them down, then chose a wiggly stitch to finish the numbers off with - they aren't going anywhere now!

Embroidered "Merry Christmas" & some other decorative elements....

While I worked on the embroidery (my sewing machine does it, thank goodness! I'm horrible at hand sewing....), Grama cut out all the figures. We perused the fabric stores for cute prints with largish (1.5-5 inch prints) figures on them. We chose snowmen, Santa Claus, penguins, snowflakes, and ornament-like prints. We looked high and low for reindeer, but didn't find any! After cutting them out, we cut out matching felt backgrounds, sewed on a piece of velcro to the felt, then sewed the background to the print (outsides together). We turned the pillows right-side out, filled with stuffing, and stitched closed. I chose the stitch all the way around the figures to give a more finished look....

The embroidery took a little planning, and as you can see, it still didn't end up centered! That's okay - I purposely stitched letters up and down from the center line because I knew I would never have them perfectly inline, and then adding other elements distracts from the fact that Merry Christmas is a bit off-centered...maybe I meant it to look like that.....My machine had several patterns on it already, but other embroidery patterns are from Ann the Gran and Embroidery Designs. They have a nice *free* selection too!

Reindeer Embroidery from Brother Designs

We had a lot of fun making the Advent Calendar and now my children can have fun playing with it! It's holding up well, I'm happy to report, and getting a lot of use. In another year or so she might actually use it to count down to Christmas! I don't think I'll be making another one any time soon, however. The two of us worked together for a week, and I worked another several days alone, before finally finishing it! I think it should make a lovely "heirloom" piece, though!

DIY SNOWFLAKES: Easy, Solder-Free, Wire & Beads

It's December, and I can't get Christmas off my mind! Everywhere I drive or walk, every time I turn the radio on, or even turn around in my own house, there are Christmas decorations! My household is still fairly young, and we don't have that many decorations yet, so I always feel there is room for more around the holidays.

This year I decided to make some of my own beaded snowflakes to add to our collection for several reasons:

     1) My husband hates glitter. Almost all snowflakes in stores have glitter galore!

     2) We, like most families, need to watch our finances and making snowflake ornaments (depending on your materials) is cheaper.

     3) I enjoy making things and always like designing new patterns!

     4) I have tons of beads and wire already at home - just waiting to be turned into something awesome!

     5) I get exactly (well, maybe not exactly....) what I want when I make my own decorations!

     6) I love sharing! What better tutorial to share around the holidays than how to make your own decorations for less?!?!? These snowflakes are quick and easy to make - they can decorate trees, garlands, chandeliers, windows - you name it! They also make nice additions to Christmas gift packages or as stocking stuffers! you can even make them in your favorite sports team's colors!

So where did I start? The awesome internet, of course! I searched for patterns that were already out there, I admit. I was looking for inspiration! I found inspiration, but not a pattern I really liked. Many beaded snowflake patterns ask for a premade wire armature that you just fill with beads. I wasn't interested in that.

Next were patterns that required the use of a soldering iron and solder - I have access to these but didn't really want to fiddle with solder......Finally, ALL patterns were of the spoke variety (upper right snowflake in the image below) - where the snowflake arms radiate outwards from a center point. These are pretty, but I was looking for something more inspired....and more accurate. Snowflakes generally have 6 sides because of the shape of the water molecule - so I wanted mine to have 6 sides/arms too!

Above are my first attempts - these are made from antique chandelier beads. I believe they are faceted glass instead of crystal, but don't really know for sure! I was given the bunch by an aunt several years ago. The largest snowflake (upper left) was my 1st. It's pretty, but takes over an hour to make and I was looking for something a little quicker - I have plenty of time-consuming projects already on my plate! The small ones were next, followed by my version of a spoke snowflake (upper right), and finally by the lower left one that is fully enclosed.

After playing around with beads and wire for a couple days, I had "perfected" a simple, quick, and pretty snowflake pattern! I was ready to make a bunch of snowflakes based primarily on one pattern, with some variations as I went along. Here are some of my snowflakes made using the pattern provided here:

Rocks, Stones, Natural Found Objects - Awesome Finds for Jewelry Making!

I recently picked up a couple rocks from the local chapter of the Rock and Mineral Club. They had a wonderful show and I couldn't help but pick out some tumbles native rocks of Idaho for use as pendants and magnets, too! While I love gemstones and imported, cut stones, sometimes a more down-to-earth statement piece is nice too.

I've created some fun pendants with rocks and stones I've picked up on my travels, but here are my latest creations with Rocks of Idaho, the 1st one features tiger iron and the 2nd one is a simpler blue-black rock.....and then I'll show you some additional pieces by other jewelry artists!

Memory Wire - More Versatile Than You May Think!

I've been absent of late for many reasons, but one reason is that I've recently taken a job at Michael's Craft Store as a Jewelry Instructor! I have my first class tomorrow, and it's on using memory wire. I've played around with this medium before, but now I realize that it is useful and fun for so many types of jewelry and decoration projects!

The most basic memory wire project is the bracelet - it often looks like a matched bangle set when worn. Seed beads, crystals, and pearls are all common beads used in this project. Here are some less basic memory wire bracelet designs:

Another basic memory wire project is the necklace - it can be as complex as the bracelet, with several loops, or simplified down to a single loop for a stunning look! Here are a couple necklaces that I think stand out among the rest:

Less often seen, but just as cool, is the memory wire ring! I've chosen one ring to show you below, but there are as many designs out there as you can imagine:

Another project that can be accomplished with memory wire in the ring size is wine charms. The pieces below use actual wine charm wires, but you can see how memory wire would serve the same function:

A final project that I'm hoping to make this coming Holiday Season is a memory wire dangle (for lack of a better name). I plan on using memory wire in the bracelet or necklace size, stringing it in reds, greens, and golds, and embellishing it with small ornaments or Christmas-themed charms. Then, you hang one end up and let the rest "dangle"! I think it would be a cute way to hang mistletoe as well.....

I couldn't find an artist's version of the ornament, but here is a simpler commercial version if you can't quite visualize it.....hopefully I'll post my own photos soon!

EDIT: I haven't made the Christmas Ornament with memory wire yet, but I did make a fun necklace with dangles! It could easily be made into the ornament I mention above simply by using more loops.....

Polymer Clay - A versatile jewelry medium

I can't believe I haven't posted about polymer clay jewelry yet! I've seen marvelous artworks created in this medium - and I have to admire the detail and work that goes into these pieces. I've tried working with polymer clay, modeling clay, firing clay - they are all similar and yet so different! What's common for me, however, is that I can't create marvelous works in these mediums.....not like the following jewelry artists, anyway. Clay is simply not my medium - I prefer hard materials such as wood and metal, or pencil drawings and beaded jewelry. I like control, which I simply do not have with clay.

These 6 artists clearly know how to manipulate polymer clay into beautiful and wondrous designs! Control over this medium isn't a problem, then, but maybe it's still a challenge?!

DIY Organization - Jewelry Holder for Necklaces or Bracelets

I have a lot of necklaces, and only one jewelry box, so what I actually have is one big knot! It takes 5-10 minutes every morning just to disentangle part of the mess. I tend to wear the same two necklaces all week so I don't have to deal with it. That means another 20 or so necklaces just lie about......

Sound familiar? Tired of it? I was - and I finally decided to do something about it! I searched the web for some DIY jewelry organizers or holders. I found several that were quite well done or unique - including one where a rake head was used to hang necklaces on the back of a door! Fun, fun..... But I didn't want to buy a rake head, or anything if I could help it.....

So I looked around the house to see what I had. I had a weathered but solid wood board that needed a little sanding. I had ribbon. I had cloth with a pretty pattern. I had tacks. I even had sandpaper and a saw to even the board edges. The only thing I was missing? Hooks! There are some really cool hooks out there, but I was going for volume instead of decor. Meaning what? I wanted BIG hooks instead of small fancy ones. But if you don't need volume but want more class, be sure to check out the hook section of home improvement stores. There are some lovelies - including fleur-di-lis!

This project took me less than an hour after I had all the materials together. It's quick, simple, and (I think) elegant. At least more elegant than a knot in my jewelry box....now my jewelry box houses my less tangled bracelets instead! Though a second hook board would certainly work for bracelets too....hmmmm....I even have left over fabric!

Materials:

Wood - cut to length, sanded smooth
Fabric - doubled and cut so it overlaps 1-2 inches onto the back of the board
Hooks - style and number up to you!
Tacks/small nails - shorter than the board is thick (don't want them going through!)
Hammer
Hanging fixtures - framing wire & eye hooks work well, plus wall hook

Ribbon - optional decoration
Sandpaper - optional for smooth wood, fine grit (220-400)
Saw - optional if wood needs to be cut
Stapler - optional, or an alternative to using tacks

Steps:

1) Cut the board to length. Sand smooth - edges most important to avoid splinters and cutting fabric on edges.

2) Layout fabric and place board on top. I chose to double the thickness of fabric. Cut the fabric so it folds onto the back of the board by 1/2 - 2 inches.

3) Fold edges of fabric under. Iron if you wish, but I just held it folded over. I like it quick and easy! Besides, it's the back of my personally jewelry holder.....

4) Tack down fabric to wood. I started on the short edges and moved to the longer edges. Either way, pull the fabric tight evenly so you don't skew the pattern. Instead of tacking down an entire side, move from side to side, edge to edge until you tack all the way around. Look up how to tack down canvas on a handmade frame if you are totally lost!

5) Admit that using a stapler would be easier. I chose tacks because my stapler was broken and I had pretty gold tacks lying about.....

6) Admire your work so far! Then chose if you want to add ribbon to it or not. I liked the look. Wrap with ribbon. Tape or more tacks may be necessary if you want your ribbon rigidly in place.

7) Add your chosen hanging fixtures to the back.

8) Go back to the front of your necklace holder and mark where you want your hooks. Or, randomly place them! Tack or screw your hooks down. The fabric may twist initially, but it usually lays flat after a couple turns. You could cut small holes if this is a problem.....

9) Hang up your new necklace/jewelry holder and start sorting out that knot for the last time!

10) Wear any necklace you want any day you want without fuss and frustration! Yay!

Looking at the Blog Layout & Design

I decided it was time for a new look for my blog. There have been a lot of changes going on at home, and just couldn't make the changes I wanted to with my old blog layout. I miss it, sure, but this one is more versatile, colorful, and in tune with the current me.

After changing the look of my blog, I decided to peruse other people's blogs. I have a lot favorited and some I follow. I started to really look at these blogs - was the blog somewhere to put pictures and connect with other people? Undoubtedly. Was it a work of art? Usually, no. Why is that? Why not make the blog beautiful too?

Well, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, no? Of course other people will think my blog ugly, no doubt, and that their blog is so cool, or lovely, or fun. I concede, this is the case. So what makes a blog a good one? It has to be more than just looks, I admit. But can't the goodness include the layout and colors and background as well?

I chose a couple blogspot blogs that I thought stood out. They are more than the basic layout. They have changed colors, added photos, changed backgrounds, and changed fonts. I think changing fonts is a biggy - at least in the title and the headers! It adds interest, grabs the attention of the viewer, and makes the blog stand out a bit. If you have something important to say, why not say it with a little style?!

These blogs have more than just nice layouts, mind you. I'm showing them because of the look of the blog, but they have some nice crafty items to show you and some are even for sale! Is there more to them than their stories? The posts are the meat of the blog, but I like the trimmings, too. I've shown you a nice bright one, a colorful one, and a moody dark one. Three themes, three moods!

As a part of this award, I must list 7 things about myself and nominate 15 other blogs. First off, 7 things about me:

1. I learned my first beading techniques from my mother on the loom. Beadweaving was introduced to me in high school, during a Native American Art class. I picked up beading again as an art release after college.

2. I have pet snakes - 2 I raised from eggs. The 3rd was a gift.

3. I have a 21 month old daughter. She is one of the lights of my life. The other is my husband of 3 years.

4. I'm from northern MN, near Canada. I miss the green and the lakes. Not the bugs....

5. I took woodshop in high school and was the only girl to take more than the beginner course. I tried to continue in college, but found small-scale metalsmithing instead.

6. I have 2 degrees (Art & Zoology) and am working toward a Master's in Natural Resources. I'm interested in Ecological Restoration & Conservation.

7. I'm slowly putting together my own metals studio, and hope to incorporate metalwork (especially silversmithing) into my future designs.

Sorry I've been so sporadic - full time grad. school and a 21 month old will do that to a mom's schedule! I've also begun an informal beading group with some other women - it was a lot of fun to sit and chat while beading for a change. I was also able to share some of my knowledge of beadweaving with one of the projects. We'll probably meet once a month and hopefully next time I'll get some photos to show you all what we've been up to!

I've seen many blogs that feature the writing artist's work, but I chose to show other people's work over mine. There are links on the blog where you can find my pieces, but would you enjoy a feature of what I'm doing? Maybe in the form of a tutorial, eh?

A Note on 1000 Markets

Many of my previous posts have had artists from 1000 Markets featured. Well, 1000 Markets has changed to Bonanza! If the links no longer work, my apologies. Bonanza was supposed to convert easily, moving seller's stock from one site to the other, with a link to the new shop as well.

My shop, of course, didn't convert. They somehow lost my items in the move! So, my 1000 Markets shop is closed, and so far I haven't bothered to try to open one on Bonanza. My Etsy shop, however, is being renovated and is still open!

First off, my apologies for the long long long delay in posts! A lot has happened in the last couple months. Our move was successful, we're enjoying our new house. Lots more space than the apartment! Our girl is loving the yard and the neighbor's kittens! I won't bore you with the other details, but let me say it's been very busy and stressful around here for a while. I'm glad to be back posting, hopefully it'll start up with some regularity again!

size of your choice - I need to know size to make sure it'll fit over your hand! These awesome bangles roll over your hand with no need for a clasp! One size fits most, but not all. For example, my husband and I can wear the same bangle, but it's a tight fit for him and strains the bangle more than is necessary. Also, if you like looser jewelry, you may chose a larger size! End of July Update: We're Moving!

Starting next weekend, we'll be even busier than usual: My family is moving out of our apartment and into a house! We're very excited for the extra space, backyard, and the design possibilities.

I'm delving into the wood realm of jewelry making again, with the help of my brother. He has the woodshop, while I have the jewelry designs. Maybe when I have a piece completed, I'll post it here for you to see!

End of June Update

First off, let me apologize for the lack of updating this month! There has been a lot going on in my already busy life - I've been attending one of the local farmer's markets as a vendor (which is surprisingly going okay even with other jewelers there), having family visiting for my daughter's 1st birthday, went to get portraits done, and my little girl has polished her ability to walk! Which means I'm spending a lot of time with her, and not on the computer....in fact, she's attempting to climb things already!

Next, I'm excited to say that since my sales went well this month, I have another decent donation ready for the National Wildlife Federation for cleanup efforts! Please see the previous post for more information on what you can do about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster.

And finally, I only need one more follower for the next giveaway event to start! I've decided that the next prize will be a peyote stitch bangle bracelet in the winner's choice of colors. I haven't decided how many colors I'm allowing, but probably 1-3, in a solid or spiral pattern. More info and pictures to follow when the next round starts!

PROCEEDS FOR CLEANUP: BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

As the BP oil leak continues in the Gulf of Mexico and hits land, and hurricane season is just around the bend, my heart cries out for all the damage and deaths that have and will occur. Since I can't go down to the coast to volunteer my services at this time, my husband and I have decided to donate money to a couple agencies putting cleanup crews together (more info below).

In addition, I will be donating 50% of all proceeds from jewelry sales through the month of June, with the possibility of continuing through to August.

Truly Unique: Glasmagie

My apologies for the delay in posting - I have chosen to show my wares at the local farmer's market this summer and have been busy getting everything organized and making displays and signage, etc. But no fear - I have a real treat for you today!

I have been watching Glasmagie on both DeviantArt and Etsy for some time now - she is a master glassblower with an amazing talent! Most glass art and sculptural pieces I see are recognizable in their form, but her's are so realistic or adorably whimsical that it blows my mind. Plus, some of her figures are small enough to wear, for she makes glass pendants and earrings too! I'm excited for when I have some extra cash to spend - but it'll be a challenge just picking one or two items to buy!

Chainmaille is another art form that I have very little experience with - not because I couldn't do it but because I don't have the patience for it. I know, beading with seed beads is so much faster. I can't explain it, maybe it's because I'm a purist and feel the need to make my own jump rings, which I don't enjoy doing....It's not even that hard, just time consuming!

Wire-wrapping is one art form that I have not delved into; I've messed around with copper wire and a little bit of silver wire here and there, but nothing too extravagant. It is, however, a very gorgeous and versatile medium for jewelry. Straight up wire designs, multicolored designs, designs with beads, or designs with set stones; organic, mechanical, fantastical, or simple. Tutorial: Pendant & Earring Basics

In preparation for this summer's farmer's markets, I have been making beaded and wire-wrapped pendants and earrings. I thought a tutorial for making simple beaded pendants/earrings wouldn't be amiss! So here it is, along with some of the tips & tricks I've picked up on the way. If you have other suggestions, please comment with them!

You'll find these tools helpful to have:

Shown are needle nose pliers, round nose pliers, and flat nose pliers. The first two are very helpful, the last is preference. You can use the needle nose pliers instead of the flatnose. Also shown are flush wire cutters and crimping pliers. Any wire cutters will work, but flush cutters will leave the wire flush, or flat, while other cutters will leave a sharp point that needs to be filed down. Crimping pliers aren't necessary, the needle nose pliers will work, but I find them helpful to have around.

And some beading materials necessary before you begin:

A bead assortment, small, large, round, square, crystal, whatever you want! Also shown are headpins and eyepins. Headpins come in fancy shapes, too, while eyepins can be decorated with beads or more dangles. You can also make your own eye pins with wire, or decorative headpins that terminate in spirals/wire designs or a hammered end.

TIP: If you don't have an anvil, use the side of a hammer head instead.

For those of you who prefer drawings over photos, or vice versa, I've included both! My diagram is for the simplest pendant or earring, while the photos show a more secure method of making pendants/earrings. Clicking on the images will open larger views in another tab/window.

Step 1: Gather your beads and headpins. Explore with your materials or look through magazines for inspiration. Once you have a winning combination, you are ready to finish your pendant/earrings!

TIP: Make sure you have enough wire left over to make a loop with the design you've chosen. If you don't, you'll have to remove some beads or get longer headpins! They come in sizes up to 3" long, if you want longer ones, you'll need to make them yourself. If you aren't going to wrap the remaining wire around the headpin at the base of the loop (shown below) you don't need as much wire remaining. You'll have to practice to find out how much wire you need left over, as different gauges of wire or sizes of loops will change that length. I prefer at least an inch because it's easier to manipulate.

Step 2: Grab the wire with your flatnose pliers and bend the wire at a 45 degree angle as near to the beads as possible. This will ensure they won't move up and down along the wire once you are finished. The angle ensures an even and centered loop once you are finished. I tend to bend the wire further than a 45 degree angle, and then move it back once I've started the loop.

Step 3: Take your round nose pliers and wrap the wire around the top side of them. You can use your fingers or the needle nose pliers, whatever is easiest for you.

Step 4: Remove the round nose pliers from the partial loop and insert the bottom side of them into the loop. Pull the wire around to complete your loop, again using either your fingers or the needle nose pliers.

NOTE: The remaining wire after the loop shown above is NOT enough to wrap around the base. You want at least 1/2 inch left over at this point. If you don't want to start over, you can trim the excess and close the loop like a jump ring, as shown in the drawing above.

Step 5: Take your flat nose pliers and hold the loop with them. Take your needle nose pliers and grab the remaining wire, holding it near the tip. Wrap the wire around the loop base.

Step 6: Take your crimping pliers to finish off the wrap. The grooves in them hold the wire nicely to round off the end so it doesn't stick out or poke the wearer. Don't push too hard, however, or the wire will crumple under/over itself.

Step 7: Finish your piece! Either attach an earwire to your loop, or string your pendant on your chosen cord/ribbon/chain. I've chosen to create a set of pendants strung on ribbon with additional beads to space them out.

Other options:
- use decorative wire or half round wire
- use bead caps to showcase a focal bead
- bend your wire in half, creating a loop in the middle, string your beads, and twist the remaining wire ends in a decorative fashion to hold the beads in place

Low-Cost Tips & Tricks for Photographing Jewelry

As a new mother and a graduate student, I don't have a lot of cash just waiting to be spent, but I do want to take good photographs, especially of my jewelry. After a lot of searching, reading, and practicing, I've come up with this list of how to improve your jewelry photographs at very little to no cost. You don't need a fancy camera, just some good light, a simple background, and some patience!

1. Focus - I think this is the most important aspect of good photography. You can edit* your photos to brighten them or remove dust from the background, but you can't edit in the details of a clear photograph. If your photos are blurry, use a macro-mode for the closeup shots or step back from your jewelry until your camera is able to focus. Take your photos at the highest resolution possible and you can edit them later to bring the jewelry "closer" without losing detail. If you don't have a tripod, you can use a washer on a string to keep your camera more steady (visit Instructables.com for directions).

2. Lighting - Use natural light to avoid the yellow/blue tint from indoor lights. Pick a window with good exposure on sunny days or go outside** on bright, cloudy days - this provides enough light to avoid dark photographs (one of my biggest problems) without overwhelming your jewelry in direct sunlight (which creates glares and shadows that dominate the photo and block the details of your jewelry). If you want to show how the piece "glitters," try a penlight (it's what gemstone photographers use to make the stones shine) instead of direct sunlight.

Some people prefer complete control over their setup and use a lightbox. I could never get enough light to use this setup and it is more expensive. There are several tutorials online to help you make your own for less, such as this one by Studio Lighting. Another option is to use a scanner. You can get really good details on your jewelry, but sometimes the lighting is a little funky.

3. Background - Simpler is better. The less clutter and action you have in the background, the more your jewelry will stand out. This doesn't mean you have to use a black or white background; in fact, neutral tones of gray or tan would be better (and cheaper) because both light and dark jewelry shows up nicely. If you are partial to black and white backgrounds, have both on hand. Dark pieces will show up well on white, while light pieces will look nice on black.

Think about texture, too, when choosing a background. Velvet makes a lovely background, but you have to be careful of the smallest particles of dust showing up in your photographs. Mirrors or shiny surfaces can make nice backgrounds, but they need to be very clean to make a nice photo. I find soft, non-reflective surfaces such as handmade paper or leather make excellent backgrounds. They are fairly cheap and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes. Stay away from anything too busy (bold patterns, bright contrasting colors, etc.) - it distracts from the jewelry.

Some people like the use of props in their photos but I'm not very good at using them so I generally stay away from props. I've seen others use them to great effect, however. Props should be visually appealing, but not distracting to the piece. Your jewelry should be what stands out and shouldn't have to compete with busy props. Use the same rules as for backgrounds - props should be clean and simple. Heavy texture such as silk flowers can overwhelm the jewelry too, but shallow texture such as seashells or driftwood can work very well. If you are using a model**, keep hair neat and tucked away from the jewelry so the jewelry is on display clearly and have the model moisturize (it keeps the skin looking soft and clean, especially important for hand shots).

4. Head-on Shots - This is especially important if you are selling your jewelry. Show the entire piece in at least one photograph - including the clasp. Other photos may be taken at oblique angles or show only part of the piece, but at least one photo should be head-on. This angle usually captures the most details and shows off the piece the best to the customer - there is no confusion as to what is being shown and bought.

I have chosen to use my own photography because I didn't want to "show off" others poor photographs (I make plenty of my own!), although I know I can find better examples of great photography. These are not perfect, but hopefully they get the ideas and tips across. If you have other suggestions for photographing jewelry for less, I'd love to hear them!

*Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP.org) is an excellent open-source paint program. It's free and has most of the same features as Adobe Photoshop.

**Remember: Customers want to feel like they are the first ones to wear a piece of jewelry. Some people may be turned off if they see jewelry outside or on a model. You can avoid both of these issues by photographing outside on a portable background (even a blanket) or using jewelry stands (try making a jewelry stand from a rolled bit of cardboard covered in cloth or paper). Also, never model your earrings (this is unsanitary and why shops don't generally accept returns on them)!

Tutorial: RAW Basics & Variations

There are many different types of beadweaving techniques. One that I find myself using quite often is RAW, or Right Angle Weave. It's easy and brings a piece together relatively quickly. It's also very versatile. Simply changing the bead shapes you use can give drastically different results!
